Author

Chuck Plaisance is not only a performer and producer -- he is an author whose books distill decades of vocal mastery, spiritual exploration, and sonic innovation into written form. His published and forthcoming works span vocal technique, sound healing, and the sacred architecture of sound itself. Each book carries the same philosophy that drives his music: awareness, perception, vibration, resonance, emotional intent, and projection with purpose.

"The Vocal Instrument" (2009)

Chuck's first book, The Vocal Instrument, was born from over two decades of teaching at Musicians Institute in Hollywood and performing on stages worldwide. Published in 2009 and promoted at Voggenreiter events and the Frankfurt Musik Messe, the book presents a refreshingly counterintuitive approach to singing: "Less means More."

Rather than teaching singers to push harder, Chuck's method focuses on what not to do -- allowing a full, powerful, rich, and emotional sound to emerge naturally. The book covers the fundamentals of the voice, natural breathing, posture, open throat technique, diaphragm balance, resonance, placement, vowels, diphthongs, and tone. A dedicated exercises section addresses physical conditioning, cardiovascular fitness, breathing techniques, vowel pronunciation, placement drills, and vocal exercises.

As Chuck writes in the introduction: "As a professional singer of many years I understand the problems and challenges singers face while trying to pursue their dreams. When I started singing, it was fun and still is fun today." The book's later chapters guide readers through choosing songs, learning to "sing like you speak," dissecting a song's emotional architecture, and effective rehearsal techniques.

Key principles include minimizing consonants and maximizing vowels, using emotional facial expressions to drive vocal coloration, and cultivating emotional flexibility and intensity over raw physical force.

"Awaken the Gentle Giant Within You" (2025)

Chuck's second major vocal technique book carries the full title Awaken the Gentle Giant Within You: The Vocal Techniques of Chuck Plaisance -- Building Power, Resonance, and Emotional Presence Through the Breath. This deeply personal work is dedicated to his father Raymond Plaisance, his mother Ramona Comeaux Plaisance, his vocal coach Jerome Stocco, his brother Raymond Jr., Wolfgang Luecke, Angelika Blaum, Ryunma Susuki, and photographer Andreas Meer.

Structured across nine chapters, the book takes readers on a journey from breath and foundation through floating vowels and warmups, emotional embodiment and presence, training and health, resonance and tone, to a final flow practice that integrates everything. The core philosophy is stated with poetic clarity: "Awareness, Perception, Vibration, Resonance, Emotional Intent, Projection with Intent. Everything is Vibration. You are a Resonator."

The book includes a groundbreaking bonus chapter: The Healing Powers of Sound. This chapter explores Chuck's experiences with 3D underwater recordings alongside whales and dolphins, his work chanting with the Tibetan monks of Gaden Shartse, and the science of energy frequencies for healing. It serves as a bridge between vocal technique and the deeper spiritual dimensions of sound that have always informed Chuck's work.

"Bali Temple of Sound and Light" (2025)

Perhaps the most visionary of Chuck's written works, Bali Temple of Sound and Light is a proposal and creative manifesto for the creation of a sacred sound temple in Bali, developed in collaboration with Prince Ade Karang Agung. Subtitled A Journey Through Voice, Frequency, and Sacred Geometry, the project draws on extensive research into Balinese spiritual traditions, Vedic and Lemurian principles, sacred water practices, and the acoustic science of temple architecture.

The work encompasses over twenty documents including a presentation deck covering the vision, the role of 3D sound in sacred space, the temple as a living instrument, immersive pilgrimage experiences, the voice of the ancestors, global delivery systems, and production timelines. Key concepts include Asta Kosala Kosali (Balinese sacred geometry), Mount Agung alignment, Gamelan tuning systems -- Slendro (5-tone, approximately 290-580 Hz) and Pelog (7-tone, approximately 299-598 Hz) -- and the phenomenon of ombak detuning (5-9 Hz) which creates brain entrainment effects.

The vision is breathtaking: a temple space where 3D sound, sacred geometry, water, and the human voice combine to create an environment for spiritual transformation and healing. Water is treated as a living amplifier, and Tirta (holy water) is infused with mantras following ancient Balinese tradition.

Upcoming: "The Healing Powers of Sound"

Announced in the bonus chapter of Awaken the Gentle Giant Within You, Chuck's next book will be a standalone exploration of the healing dimensions of sound. Topics will include the energetic architecture of the human voice, harmonic resonance and frequency consciousness, sacred geometry and vibrational healing, ancient sound rituals and future sonic technologies, and the voice as spiritual conduit, ceremony, and prayer.

This forthcoming work will also incorporate the "Tuning the Temple" chapter -- a detailed exploration of the sacred science of sound in Balinese temples, including guided rituals, gamelan frequencies, and water-voice-intention practices.
